Homemade Peanut Butter and Bacon Dog Treats

We need to take more care on what we feed our pets.  So many hidden chemicals are added to the dog food these days that are not good and can be dangerous to their health.

That is why I have been looking for new ways to keep our pets safe.  This recipe does not have anything hidden in it.  We have been giving them to our Blue Heeler and now our Boxer X dog Keizer for years and they had no side effects.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Smooth P/nut paste ( not crunchy)

    ¾ cup Non fat milk

    1 large egg

2 cups Plain Flour or Wheat flour

    1 tablespoon baking powder

1 cup oats rolled or quick oats

    2-3 strips bacon. Chopped.

Method

I used 1 cup SR Flour and either 1 cup bran or wheat germ.

I always doubled these amounts so do not have to keep cooking them.

Heat oven to 300 Deg. Line two trays with baking paper or sprinkle with flour (but need to dust this off) or you can use silicon baking mats.

In a large bowl gently mix the peanut butter, milk and egg together with a large spoon or spatula (takes a while). Then switch to whisk to make sure no lumps. Add flour and baking powder. Mix in the rest of dry ingredients and bacon. Mix well.

Turn out onto floured board (divide makes it easier) Roll out like pastry with rolling pin. Approx. ¼ in thick.

Cut into shapes with knife or cutters. I do this in block of squares about 1” square (not exact). Place on trays and cook for about 15 – 20 minutes or until brown and cooked.

Make sure properly cooked, cool and pack away when completely cold. so, they will keep.

They say you can freeze these, but if properly cooked and not too thick we just store in our sealed yoghurt containers (like a bucket)

Cook some until they burnt as charcoal is great for their teeth
